Objectives

The "Youth in Mountains" project was initiated with the aim to engage young people in mountain activities, countering the trends of decreasing interest and engagement in such activities. We identified a range of issues prevalent among the youth in the involved countries, including a lack of clear information about mountain activities at the local level, reduced participation in such activities, and a general inclination towards a sedentary lifestyle. The project addressed these challenges by fostering a community environment that encouraged active participation and learning. Our primary objectives were to stimulate interest in mountain activities among youth, create informal groups for these activities, and promote non-formal and informal learning mobility. We focused on including youth with fewer opportunities who faced social and economic disadvantages, as well as those living in remote or rural areas with limited access to such activities. Through the project, we organized easy trekking tours, camping trips, survival workshops, and various educational promotions. These activities not only equipped the participants with mountaineering knowledge and skills but also fostered a love for spending free time actively in nature. The project successfully created a platform where young people could learn from each other and stimulate mutual interest in outdoor activities. Many participants developed strong connections and formed groups that continued to engage in mountain activities post-project. Moreover, the project helped cultivate a cadre of young leaders within the community who are now capable of training others, thereby ensuring the sustainability of interest and engagement in mountaineering activities. Participants, highly active on social media, served as ambassadors for the project and its ideals. They shared their experiences widely, influencing their peers and broadening the reach of the project’s impact. This not only increased awareness but also motivated more youths to participate in similar activities, thereby expanding the project’s influence beyond the immediate participants. The cultural exchanges and educational sessions held during the project enriched the participants' experiences, providing them with broader perspectives and new skills. Post-project, participants continued to share their experiences within the community through storytelling and practical workshops, demonstrating the learnings from their activities. This has prepared the community better for exploring mountainous terrains and has increased local engagement in mountain activities. The positive energy and engagement from the youths have had a noticeable impact on the community, encouraging a more active lifestyle and greater appreciation for the natural environment. As the project concludes, we anticipate that the legacy of increased interest and participation in mountain activities will continue to grow, fostering a healthier, more vibrant community.
