Objectives

Our project started from the premise that nowadays young people spend more time indoors than outdoors, leading to a passive lifestyle. This generation, known as the E-Generation, has grown up around computers, the internet, and social media, often sitting in front of screens for extended periods. They also tend to avoid going outdoors, possibly due to lack of encouragement or awareness of the benefits of outdoor activities like hiking and nature walks. Moreover, studies had indicated that individuals experiencing stress were more likely to have poorer health. The pandemic had exacerbated levels of stress and anxiety, particularly among young people. This issue was identified in all partner communities, where youth spent extended hours in front of screens for both study and leisure, disconnecting them from the outside world, leading to a lack of exercise and nature time. We have recognized this need for young people to have the chance to gather around other young people so that can communicate, connect and develop an understanding of each other and themselves through these relationships and experiences. At the same time, for more than 2 years most of the youth from the communities the partner organisations activate in have stopped travelling, had no contact with people outside of their proximities and needed to engage again in intercultural dialogue and explore at first-hand other cultures. Thus, with this project, we aimed to get young people outdoors, giving them the opportunity to explore nature and understand the importance of spending time outdoors for mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Hiking was the chosen outdoor activity, known for its benefits in improving overall health and relieving stress. However, it required knowledge about tools, route selection, trail markers, clothing, and safety measures. Drawing from their experiences, together with the partner organizations we designed an outdoor experiential learning program that promoted personal, social, and environmental interactions among youth from diverse backgrounds and nationalities. Harghita County's mountainous area provided an ideal location for hiking, with many nearby opportunities. The objectives reached by the implementation of the project were as follows: O1. We developed positive attitudes and understanding of 41 young people from RO, HU, CZ and PT with regards to engaging in intercultural dialogue with youth from lands other than their own, by the end of the mobility; O2. We developed the knowledge and abilities of 41 young people from RO, HU, CZ and PT with regards to practicing safely hiking, by the end of the mobility; O3. By the end of the project, we raised awareness of the importance of the people-nature balance and promoted the benefits of hiking in the four partner communities. The project was closely aligned with the objectives of the Erasmus+ program and Youth Exchanges: - The project aligned with the Erasmus+ program guide by enhancing key competences and skills, with a specific focus on their relevance to a cohesive society. This was achieved by implementing a youth-centred learning program that empowered young people to take the lead and actively participate, thus increasing self-empowerment and self-esteem. - Youth exchanges aimed to promote intercultural dialogue, a sense of belonging, and the development of positive attitudes among young people while breaking down prejudices and stereotypes. The project successfully accomplished these objectives through peer learning, teamwork, and collaboration among young participants from RO, HU, CZ, and PT. - The project contributed to the EU Youth Strategy 2019-2027 by empowering youths to be architects of their own lives, fostering resilience, and equipping them with life skills to adapt to a changing world. It also promoted social inclusion by involving young people with fewer opportunities and encouraged mental health, physical activity, and healthy lifestyles. - In alignment with the European Youth Goals, the project contributed to achieving several objectives: o Youth Goal no. 5 by encouraging young people to spend more time outdoors and engage in hiking activities to improve their health and well-being. o Youth Goal no. 8 by providing experiential learning experiences, guidance, debriefing, reflection, and monitoring to young people, enabling them to acquire a holistic approach to learning. o Youth Goal no. 10 by promoting hiking as an environmentally friendly outdoor activity and educating young people on safe hiking practices. Additionally, participants were encouraged to use green means of transportation, if possible. - The project also aligned with the Inclusion and Diversity Strategy by reducing barriers to the participation of young people with fewer opportunities in transnational projects. Furthermore, it promoted the Erasmus+ program to young people facing various challenges.
