Objectives

The idea of this project began with discussions that we had with our volunteers and young people in Resita involved in our last cleaning campaign in August 2022 when we realized that young people in our community lacked education on environmental issues. We centralized their needs on the topic and decided to outline this initiative. The needs that we identified among youth in our local community were common ones for the young people the partners worked with. Romania and Macedonia has no environmental education for kids and youth, and, moreover, the national strategies in diminishing climate change are extremely poor (there is no selective collection of trash, there are still rural places where the population disposed of trash in nature, the development of sustainable transport alternatives is poorly developed, etc). In Hungary and Spain, even though things were better when it came to national strategies on environmental protection, there is no ecological education available for kids and youth. In all 4 countries, young people function based on other generations' examples when it came to environmental practices (most of them being bad examples), but the educational system didn't provide any support in developing their ecological skills, interest, and awareness. The aim of our project was to stimulate the involvement of young people in volunteering activities to protect the environment and combat climate change. The objectives of the project were: (we only had 36 participants out of 40 that were planned initially. 4 Spanish participants were not able to travel to Romania and the time did not permit us to make any other changes related to redistribution of participants). O1: to enrich the knowledge of the 36 young people, from 4 countries, about protecting the environment and combating climate change, during the exchange. O2: to develop the skills and competencies needed by 36 young people from 4 countries to organize and carry out volunteering activities for environmental protection and combating climate change, during the exchange; O3: to enrich the awareness of the 36 young people, from 4 countries, on the importance of volunteering for the protection of the environment and the fight against climate change in their community, during the exchange and after the termination of its funding. Through this project, a total of 35 participants from Hungary, Romania, Spain, and Macedonia gained more knowledge about protecting the environment and combating climate change, developed the skills and competencies needed to organize and carry out volunteering activities for environmental protection and combating climate change, and have now a higher awareness of the importance of volunteering for the protection of the environment and the fight against climate change in their community. The participants created an e-guide on raising awareness among young people regarding climate change and the importance of environmental protection. The guide consisted of steps and tools for taking durable and concrete actions in the local community. The guide was presented, during the exchange, in front of representatives of National Environmental Agency from Caras-Severin county who came with feedback and open disussions on participants' ideas. The participants also organized a public campaign under the name of: Green day in my community in Resita city, during the exchange and one similar campaign back at home in the follow-up phase. When it came to youth work practice, the participants were also beneficiaries and facilitators. We wanted to increase their awareness of the common issue of environmental protection and create a space for them to develop activities by themselves aiming to raise their knowledge and skills on the topic, as well as civic spirit so that they went back home motivated to initiate and volunteer in different activities for protecting the environment and have a more ecological-friendly community. Non-formal education strategies were used in the exchange activities, and for the skills acquired in the exchange learning process, the participants used the Youthpass Certificate.
