In 2021, the Phiren Amenca Network published a research report under the Roma Youth Voices project. The research showed a big gap between the frameworks for youth participation and the actual involvement of Roma youth. Roma youth are often left out of EU youth programs and do not benefit as much as other young people. The main problems for Roma youth are racism, discrimination, limited access to education and jobs, and low participation in social and public life. The report found that 27% of Roma youth seek help from their families, 25% from friends, and only 16% from nearby NGOs. Roma youth NGOs have limited resources, making it hard for them to run projects and reach more youth. Even though the number of Roma youth-led organizations was slowly increasing, they still lacked the necessary support. The COVID-19 pandemic made things worse, reducing the involvement and motivation of youth workers. To adrress these issues, the project aimed to: - Improve the knowledge and skills of 33 youth and social workers, and volunteers working with Roma youth over 14 months. - Promote the use of the "9 Steps Guide" in 11 Roma communities across 11 countries over 14 months. - Increase the capacity of 11 partner organizations to work with Roma youth over 14 months. - Share experiences and support among 33 participants over 14 months. The project identified several needs: increasing the capacity of Roma youth NGOs, training new youth workers, diversifying methods and ideas, promoting the "9 Steps Guide," empowering Roma youth, improving the quality of youth activities, and enhancing the knowledge of Roma NGO staff in developing activities.
