Objectives

The TEAMS project set-out to combat the fact that in the elections that preceded its creation the voter turnout, especially in the ranks of young people, was alarmingly low. The project was divided into parts - getting the participants accustomed with the importance of vote, of public participation and how to get informed objectively; next up the participants to the TEAMS mobility got familiar by practice with methods of engaging with their local representatives or other authority figures in their communities, such as high school principle, sports club director etc. – while also learning about methods of consulting the needs of their whole community and, then, voicing their discontent publicly, in an orderly manner; during the period of time between the end of the TEAMS mobility and the youth event the participant have concentrated their efforts into the online and offline promotion of democratic values, the importance of vote and how to prepare for vote – local, regional and national levels. During this period and after the roundtable, the participants and the implementation team have collaborated with local representatives from the Buzau City Hall, high school principles from the city, the County’s Pupils’ Council and the local Europe Direct Centre in order to raise awareness about the importance, implication and the process of voting. The described structure stems from the three central concepts of the EU’s Youth Strategy – engage, connect, empower. The main objectives of the project were: O1: The development of skills for active participation in civic life for 60 young people, 5 youth workers, from Buzau County for a period of 18 months. O2: The dissemination of truthful information related to political life at the local, national level, regardless of the socio-familial context of the 60 young participants, both during the 18 months of the project and after its completion. O3: Adopting a positive vision of politics for the 60 young participants from Buzau County, to increase the level of active young citizens in the local community, during the 18 months of the project, after its completion. Through the project’s activities and, implicitly, reaching its main objectives, the low level of knowledge of civic education for 60 high school youngsters from Buzau was addressed; their level of public participation, either through volunteering, getting involved in municipal campaigns, high school campaigns or in local NGOs, has raised; through the informative and practical sessions of the project the youngsters have become more aware of the political partisanship phenomena in families, thus becoming more aware to not just adopt the same opinions and views of their parents without questioning them. The first step of the project was represented by visits at the “B.P Hasdeu” National College and at the “Spiru Haret” Pedagogy National College, in order to promote the activities and get to know the possible future participants. After these visits the implementation team was made aware of the desire of pupils from other high schools to participate, thus visits at the Economic College, “Mihai Viteazu” College and the “Alexandru Marghiloman” High School succeeded. Through the online promotion of the project and of the signing up survey, as well as the pupils informing their friends, participants have enrolled from most of the Buzau-based high schools, while the youngsters that ended up participating live in both in the city, as well as the rural nearby areas. Thus, the activities of the project had a good reach, involving participants from multiple educational, social and economic categories. After signing-up, young participants took part in online informative sessions – these sessions were non-formal activities that familiarised the pupils with the topic at hand. The informative sessions focused on how voting works, why voting matters, how does a city hall function and why youth active public participation is relevant. At the same time, the virtual meetings offered the youngsters an idea of how the nonformal activities will look during the mobility, as “mini-activities” were implemented online using tools such as Mentimeter, Padlet and features of Zoom, such as the breakout rooms. Finally, the two online meetings offered the implementation team a good idea of the group’s dynamic, needs and level of knowledge. 30 of these participants were selected for the mobility, where they have learnt about civic participation, the inner workings of the city hall and how decisions get made at local level through simulations, role-playing and debates. These activities were important for their development as active citizens in their communities and for becoming vectors that drive change. All of the gathered information has been redacted into the TEAMS Guide, which has been disseminated to local public authorities in Buzau and promoted through online and offline campaigns and the final roundtable activity.
