Objectives

The project aimed to contribute to improving the visibility of youth organizations and initiatives for young people from three countries, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia, thereby enhancing the media portrayal of youth in society by breaking stereotypes and prejudices. This was pursued through empowering youth workers to create and promote media content that informs and advocates for young people and their activities. The goal was for youth workers to develop public speaking and media communication skills through the project, as well as to strengthen their digital and media literacy, which is crucial for youth and youth workers today. The problem we identified and which served as the starting point was the negative portrayal of youth in the media, confirmed by numerous studies conducted in all three participating countries as well as at the European level. One of the most important reports in this regard is the "Youth in the Media Mirror" by the National Youth Council of Serbia. Traditionally, youth are mostly depicted in crime news, portraying them as violent, immoral, and promiscuous. On the other hand, the only media outlets that approach youth and the issues they face analytically and ethically are youth media predominantly operating via internet platforms and creating content for social media, which is the primary source of information for young people. The project also contributed to the promotion of youth media in Serbia, showcasing their positive practices and thereby encouraging youth workers to have a more comprehensive understanding of how media content for young people is created. Most youth media outlets stem from youth-led civil society organizations, hence the focus of our project on capacity-building for youth workers to enhance the visibility of their programs and actions in the media and thus contribute to dismantling stereotypes and prejudices about youth perpetuated in the media. Given that today, thanks to social media, anyone can be a creator of media content, the project also aimed to raise awareness about the responsibility individuals have when creating content on social media platforms. Through the project, the Bečej Youth Association presented its longstanding practice in creating and implementing youth programs in the fields of youth journalism and activism, thus promoting proven methodologies in working with young people in this important area.
