Objectives

The “Building Bridges” project was a 22-month-long youth initiative that brought together young people from seven countries – Slovenia, Croatia, Portugal, Estonia, Poland, Romania, and Hungary – with the aim of exploring the meaning of solidarity, volunteerism, and cultural diversity during times marked by social crises, war, and the aftermath of the pandemic. Through a variety of activities, we wanted to bring the concepts of mutual help, empathy, and active citizenship closer to young people. The project focused on vulnerable groups who are often pushed to the margins of society, such as members of the Roma community, LGBTQ+ youth, migrants, the homeless, and the elderly. We aimed to highlight issues of discrimination, hate speech, and social exclusion, while also giving young people the chance to experience the transformative power of solidarity and volunteering. Participants developed personal competencies, learned about teamwork, gained self-confidence, and gathered experience in event organization and creative expression. Art played a key role as a tool to express opinions, emotions, and views of the world. We used photography, theatre, writing, podcasts, and other creative formats to address important topics – peace, understanding, respect for diversity, and youth mental health. Environmental sustainability was also a central theme of the project, as we believe youth work must include responsible and eco-conscious approaches. Participants learned how small changes, such as choosing green travel, recycling, and adopting mindful habits, can have a positive environmental impact. With this project, we wanted to build international bridges – between cultures, individuals, and experiences – that each young person brought with them. The project built on the experiences of previous successful initiatives by the Creative Youth Association, such as “Volunteers Without Borders,” “#JoinUs,” and “WAKE UP EUROPE!”. This edition, with its extended duration and wide partnership, strengthened the role of youth work as a driver of social change, both locally and across Europe. We hoped that each participant would return home with new skills, a deeper sense of belonging, and the motivation to contribute to a more tolerant, solidary, and connected Europe.
