Objectives

Project "Into the Wilderness" aimed to address the already identified needs of young people in their local environment and local enviroments of partner organizations, which had been heightened during the Covid era. These needs primarily include mental health care and connection with nature. In 2023, we sought to further reward and expand the "We're all in this together" exchange that took place a year earlier, by incorporating animal interaction. We focused on the pressing issue of teenage mental health. A study titled "Youths' Mental Health during the COVID-19 Pandemic" reports evidence and hypotheses of worsening mental health and psychological well-being in young people. During this period, many young people faced various pressures, accompanied by feelings of loneliness. We noticed that young people have long avoided discussing mental health with one another or with adults. We believed that such unaddressed pressures could lead to severe consequences (suicidal tendencies, various dependencies, and other symptoms related to mental health issues). With this project, we aimed to provide young people with tools and knowledge on what individuals can do for others, how they can support each other, how to work together in groups, and how to support each other when someone needs future help. We endeavored to create a better tomorrow in terms of mental health at a broader societal level, with the desire for young people and society to once again openly discuss and normalize topics related to mental health. Our intention was to help young people empower themselves with knowledge of self-care, to be able to take care of their mental health and to provide support to those still struggling, and to support them in ways to specifically regulate their nervous system and create a supportive international community for young people. By including animals, participants established a connection with them and with nature and tried to find their inner peace. The set goals for the exchange were: 1. CONNECTION WITH THE SELF - for participants to learn to establish a connection with themselves through interaction with nature and animals and to maintain it with reflections, 2. LEARNED TECHNIQUES - participants will learn to use techniques for dealing with stressful situations (journaling, breathing exercises, visualization). 3. PSYCHOSOCIAL SAFE SPACE - participants will have enough time for themselves and a safe space created. 4. AUTHENTIC EXPRESSION OF EMOTIONS - participants will express their feelings through painting, photography, and writing. The set results of the exchange are as follows: 1. Learned techniques for dealing with stress/stressful situations, 2. Creation of a reflective journal, 3. Concluding event in ZMŠT, 4. Issued Youthpass certificates.
