For several years now, the Youth Center Postojna has been trying to involve young people in the decision-making process in society from an early age. With this in mind, we first established the Children's Municipal Council in Postojna in 2017. Already at that time, the children's different way of thinking compared to adults became apparent, with their fresh ideas and different approaches to solving problematic issues. The children highlighted topics that concerned them, such as peer violence, non-chemical addictions, and rejection by peers. Over the years, our work has demonstrated a great need to give young people a voice and enable them to influence the environment in which they live and will live in the future. With this aim, we joined forces with other organizations and young people to design our project. We noticed that after finishing primary school, despite participating in the children's municipal council, young people often do not know how to be heard and how to express their uniqueness, their needs, ideas, and desires. We offer young people (especially those who do not feel accepted in society) a safe space where they can express themselves and present their ideas for changes in society. In working with young people, we emphasize the importance of participation and the role and significance of youth in various processes. We observe that young people want to participate actively in decision-making processes but do not know how. They often do not see the importance of participation for their own present and future. They want change in their local and broader environment, but they perceive dialogue with decision-makers as something unattainable. They doubt that they will be heard by decision-makers and fear that their proposals and ideas will have no impact. When given the opportunity to participate in decision-making, they often choose not to because it is usually presented to them in a way that they do not understand, is not relatable to them, and therefore does not attract them. In this project, young people were introduced to gamification methods that allow serious topics to be presented in a playful way. Through this exchange, we aimed to bring the important and serious topic of participation in decision-making processes closer to young people using the method of gamification. At the same time, we aimed to introduce gamification methods as a tool for learning and working in the future. This will help young people more easily recognize opportunities for active participation and the impact they can achieve through it. They learned about co-decision mechanisms used by young people in other countries and adapted them for the local environment. The result of the project is an escape room on the topic of youth participation, which is available for use by young people from the municipality and the region. The escape room is sustainable, as it is made from recycled materials, and it is modular and portable, meaning that it can be set up multiple times for specific periods or easily moved to another location, ensuring continuity and a broader educational effect.
