The main objectives of the project were: -To empower youth workers to work more easily with young people by providing them with a greater understanding and concrete tools and methods to help them overcome and cope with mental distress, -To raise the level of self-awareness and enable participants to develop their competences in a practical way, -To raise the general level of awareness and available support on mental health problems among young people in the local communities of the partner organisations, -Testing compatibility and developing the conceptual design of the project idea of the strategic partnership, -Establishing a facilitated and more cohesive cooperation and exchange of knowledge and good practices between the partner organisations. Both the rationale for this project and the main theme it addresses were identified and chosen based on an awareness of the gravity of the current situation, with an increasing number of young people experiencing mental health problems. We live in a society that is considered developed and privileged, where many individuals are exposed to stress and pressures when trying to meet societal expectations. We have found through many conversations with young people that they often do not talk about their problems because they feel guilty that they have no reason to feel unwell in a world that offers them more than young people from the less developed world. Because of their lack of understanding, they often compare themselves to people from completely different backgrounds, even though statistics show that the developed world has the highest levels of mental health problems and suicide. They lack the ability to process objectively the information they receive from social networks and the awareness that most of their peers share similar concerns and hardships. Young people also face a lack of control over their emotional reactions and youth workers do not know how to respond or how to approach them most effectively. We carried out two activities: one was a training course, the main aim of which was to empower youth workers, who often play an important role in the development of young people and have a lot of contact with them, and as a result develop a deeper sense of connection and trust that some young people, especially those from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, do not get elsewhere. From past experience, we have learned that just having an honest, open conversation about this topic brings relief and a greater sense of understanding. For this reason, we felt that youth work needs more youth workers who know how to create an environment and organise activities where this is encouraged. We wanted to approach this by developing competences, acquiring knowledge, learning about methods and tools to ensure greater understanding and coping skills on current issues or mental distresses, and by gaining a greater understanding of the workings of the mind and body. We also wanted to increase the self-confidence and self-understanding of the participants and empower them with tools that would help them to build an inner balance and understanding so that they can be a support to the young people they come into contact with. The second activity was a 3-day feasibility visit, because we wanted to build on our past work in mental health with a strategic partnership. Through this activity, we connected with like-minded organisations that have also been active in the mental health field for a long time, and also have a desire to achieve greater impact and positive results in this area. The aim was to join forces, to share the knowledge and experience we have gained from our past work and to create an opportunity through which a topic of extreme relevance at the moment could be appropriately addressed. Through this activity, we developed the project idea of a strategic partnership, through which we will create materials, methods and tools that are accessible, understandable and useful in youth work, while at the same time being based on the high quality knowledge of leading experts. We also wanted to raise the quality and consolidate new partnerships.
