The Mladina 2020 survey revealed that protecting nature is very important to young people, and they largely strive for sustainable behavior, but often lack mechanisms to practice it. Therefore, with the project Catalysts of Sustainable Change, we aimed to enable young people to practice sustainable behavior in their local environments, as they understand and need it, by carrying out a sustainable initiative in their local community. This was done with the support of trained youth workers and using youth work methods. We also wanted to ensure that their challenges, ideas, reflections, and initiatives were heard at both the local and national levels, and to provide them with the experience of democratic participation in the form of dialogue with national (and also local) decision-makers through the mechanism of youth dialogue. As part of the project, young people had the opportunity to take the lead and participate in the entire process of implementing the initiative, from planning to execution and dissemination. They achieved this through two local educational events, preparing an online awareness campaign, drafting the Green Manifesto, carrying out the initiative, and participating in the final conference – the national youth dialogue. They were supported in the implementation by youth workers from six youth centers, members of the MaMa Network, who attended training at the start of the project to plan and carry out initiatives and youth dialogue in local environments. Through the project, based on the youth work process (a process of involving young people in planning, implementing, and evaluating project ideas), we engaged, connected, and empowered young people to raise awareness, address, and take action on sustainability (in the broader sense) and inclusive society, thus strengthening their competencies, dialogue, and active citizenship, and enabling them to become catalysts for sustainable change, thereby contributing to changes in the local environment. The project’s goals, which were fully achieved, were as follows: Conduct six local educational events for young people on the topics of sustainability, inclusion, and planning youth initiatives – young people for young people, decision-makers, and the broader local community. Carry out six local sustainable actions/initiatives in the local environment, planned and implemented by young people under the mentorship of youth workers. Organize six podcast recording and editing workshops to raise awareness of youth work and youth centers, thereby addressing topics important to young people. Conduct training for youth workers on the implementation of local initiatives, youth work practices, and the development of a methodology for carrying out initiatives based on the core process of youth dialogue, enabling the involvement of decision-makers and empowering them to work with young people, especially unorganized youth. Carry out an online campaign together with young people. Find synergies between young people and decision-makers at the local level and organize a youth dialogue with higher-level national decision-makers at the national dialogue in Ljubljana. Publish an e-booklet titled The Green Manifesto, which will compile good practices, initiatives, and demands from young people, serving as a foundation for ensuring the youth dialogue process and advocating for youth interests.
