Objectives

The training course "Act it out! - Learning by Living Library" was the implementation of long working experience of Theatre with no Home with youth living in the shadow of our society (medical or psychiatric diagnosis, incomplete education, difficult family background, etc.) into the professional life of youth workers from 6 EU countries. During the training, we focused on a specific method - Living Library whose central idea is to share a person's personal story in front of an audience. Together with participants of the training we discovered the double potential of the Living Library - awareness/acceptance of one's own story by the actor himself and empathic informal learning through hearing this story. We showed the participants that the Living Library is an open dialogue and not a passive lecture format, which serves to confront one's own attitudes and trains critical thinking, destroys communication barriers and supports open dialogue, breaking down prejudices and stereotypes. Among other things, we inspired the participants with a number of tools and exercises based on art to make their work with young people more efficient. With "Act it out! - Learning by Living Library" training for youth workers, we pointed out several risky factors: closed communities of young people, extremism, loss of life goals, false life patterns, unfinished education = low chances for quality professional placements, but also the consequences of the pandemic period = social isolation in concept of problematic family background. Our goal was to share the proven good practices of our organisation, to increase competences of youth workers through theatre and expressive approaches in creating an open dialogue, to equip youth workers with proven work practices to combat stereotypes and prejudices in marginalised communities, using the "Living Libraries" method to support the efficiency of workers in the process of integrating youth into a prosperous life, to increase awareness and empathy towards risk groups of young people through their personal stories, to increase the awareness of young people about stereotypes and prejudices and their negative consequences, act preventively and limit the burnout syndrome among youth workers, and to build networks of partners for future cooperation or sharing of experiences.
