Objectives

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the systemic frailty of our global economy and society. It is not an exaggeration to say that we are currently living in a world characterised by multiple global crises: a health crisis, an economic and financial crisis, a climate crisis and a crisis in nature. To use the words of Secretary-General of the United Nations, A. Guterres, “COVID-19 is not only a wake-up call, it is a dress rehearsal for the world of challenges to come.” The common protection of nature and fight against climate change has demonstrated a bonding and uniting power among youngsters from all over the world, with its biggest example: the Fridays For Future movement. We think that this crisis, although unprecedented, is offering young people the opportunity to take the reins of the situation and speak up for their future, but for doing this, they need to better understand their key role in a fight which is not just against a climate change but also against the willingness of many governments of not changing or acting at all. Some of the biggest reasons for the ongoing climate and environmental crisis occurring not just in Europe but globally can be identified with the lack of environmental literacy and in the inadequacy of the skills to solve this issue: people are unprepared to it and informations mostly come from mass-media which often present the situations in a very simplified way. As a result, the perception of the environment and its problems are becoming distorted and complicated to understand. Especially young people who, despite the mass, have the ability to perceive information in a deeper and critical way, are approaching this kind of issue in a very sloppy way and are thus far from being able to portray the situation in an accurate way. For this reason, environmental NGOs working with young people should give more importance to the knowledge (understanding), communication and promotion of environmental problems, in order to contribute to a fully-fledged green literacy. As we start to emerge from these two years of change and adaptation, where do we want to go? Will we take the hardearned lessons from this past year – listen to experts, protect the vulnerable, work together, and value what we’ve got – and head toward a just and sustainable future? Or will we ease back into our old lives and wait for our phones to light up announcing the next crisis? Prior to this application we investigated our partners and fellow youth workers' needs and we have identified the growing need for improving conceptual understanding of environmental education, particularly the competencies that young people must acquire in order to live sustainably in their communities. With Build Your Future Nature we want to provide youth workers a set of tools and practical experiences with environmental and climate change education that they can bring back in their communities and use to guide young people to embrace a sustainable attitude and live and learn in harmony with nature. We strongly believe that what can really unite us is a common vision for a better world, a sustainable future where humanity can thrive in harmony. We believe that nature needs to be nurtured and a transition to such a future is possible and it’s in young people’s hands, that’s why it is important for us to provide youth workers and partner NGOs enough tools and methodologies to ease this process. The specific objectives of the project are: - bring awareness and encourage a collective reflection about the global ecological issue, particularly on a European scale, and to which extent our lifestyle affects the nature and contributes to climate change; - to exchange best practices on various ecological action strategies that can be transferred to participants' contexts; - bring awareness about the 13th UN Sustainable Development Goal, about climate change - discover and promote, but also offer the participants specific tools/methods they can easily implement in their daily life to reduce their negative impact on the environment; - raise awareness about Erasmus+ program and the ways the participants can use it to implement their own projects and ideas; - to promote the inclusion and employability of marginalized young people with fewer opportunities, as well as to empower them with non-formal education content; - to develop sustainable follow-up actions targeting hard to reach young people that youth workers will implement in the after the training
