Objectives

Internationalisation is one of the points within our development plan. We understand as we are educating our students, that Europe and the world is becoming a smaller place. Through advancements in technology our students are using various resources and support networks from across the globe. English and knowledge of the language is becoming an increasingly important factor in education. We are building the workforce of the future and reaching across borders is becoming more and more significant. A high majority of our students (85%+) are from Austria and by implementing the project we wanted to provide them with the opportunity to explore new cultures and gain an insight into different methods of teaching by attending a university in a different country. Due to the small size of our institution our focus remains on building and promoting partnerships within Europe. We encourage the students to participate in an exchange or traineeship abroad in areas that are of greater interest to them and which could support them in their future development. They have the ability to try out new areas of expertise or expand on their current learning within a new environment, they have the choice of which course and modules they would like to focus on, which skills including language skills they would like to develop. By providing the students with an opportunity to participate on such an exchange, we offer them an invaluable experience and development of their personal skills. They gain an understanding and acceptance of different cultures, different university structures and learning methods. They develop skills in overcoming language barriers, cultural differences, solving problems, living alone and coordinating and planning their travel. Plus the students have the additional benefit that some of the financial hurdles and extra expense were compensated by receiving the Erasmus grant. For our employees, we wanted to enhance the collaboration and network for research and teaching purposes by sending them to our partner institutions. Here they could share expterise and knowledge whilst also obtaining a different viewpoint or area of expertise from their European colleagues. They could see and try the physical infrastructure available to students at the partner universities and compare it or bring back suggestions for improvement. The short-term mobility is a good solution for our employees because their schedules are normally so compact that any longer period would not be possible. We also wanted to situate and promote our university within Europe for prospective incoming students. Accepting incoming students within our institution and integrating them in class with the current students brings a positive diversity into the university. They also bring with them skills and techniques or experiences that our own students can learn and benefit from. The incoming students provoke an interest within our own students and staff regarding their home countries and home universities, and promote the Erasmus exchange programme and the possibilities that this programme enables.
