Objectives

As one of Austria’s leading universities of applied sciences, FH JOANNEUM is firmly committed to internationalisation as a central pillar of its institutional strategy. This commitment is firmly anchored in the Erasmus Policy Statement (2021–2027), which defines internationalisation as a continuous and dynamic process permeating all areas of the university. There is a particular focus on mobility, intercultural learning, quality assurance and social responsibility. Within the Erasmus+ framework, FH JOANNEUM cooperates with 233 European partner universities (KA131) and 53 non-European partner institutions (including KA171). Partner institutions are selected based on academic quality and curricular compatibility, while ensuring a balanced and sustainable international network. The university advances its international profile through strategic partnerships, innovation, service orientation, and rigorous quality assurance. FH JOANNEUM firmly believes in the transformative impact of study and work experiences abroad on students’ intercultural competence and future employability. Through the implementation of the Erasmus+ KA131 2023 project, FH JOANNEUM aimed to broaden and enhance the quality of mobility opportunities, ensuring equitable access for all students, including those with fewer opportunities. The project has contributed to the integration of global perspectives into teaching and research, the fostering of an international and intercultural learning environment, and the offering of diverse mobility formats, including semester exchanges, short-term stays such as Blended Intensive Programmes, traineeships, and staff and teaching mobilities. These activities directly support the institutional strategy of embedding international experiences into curricula ('mobility windows') and encouraging students and staff to develop intercultural and professional skills abroad. For students, the project aimed to strengthen academic and personal competencies, enhance employability and foster intercultural awareness. For teaching and administrative staff, mobility was supported as a means of internationalising curricula, developing pedagogy, and strengthening international networks. These objectives reflect the Erasmus Policy Statement’s emphasis on staff mobility as a means of enriching teaching with global perspectives and expanding intercultural competence within the institution. Additionally, KA171 complemented the objectives of KA131 by facilitating the mobility of incoming students and staff from Partner Countries. This broadened opportunities for all stakeholders and reinforced FH JOANNEUM’s overall international profile. Therefore, the project contributed to the professional and academic growth of individuals and to institutional goals such as building strategic partnerships, expanding joint programmes, promoting multilingualism and fostering inclusive participation, particularly for students with fewer opportunities or from diverse backgrounds, as highlighted in the Erasmus Policy Statement. In summary, through KA131, FH JOANNEUM aimed to bring its Erasmus Policy Statement to life by creating equitable, high-quality and diverse mobility opportunities. This would advance the internationalisation of curricula, enhance employability and contribute to the vision of a common European Education Area.
