Founded in 1669, the University of Innsbruck (UIBK) has an international focus and strong local roots. It is located at a traditional north-south crossroads connecting Europe. Its university tradition is characterised by a cosmopolitan attitude and international exchange. In this respect, all university members contribute to the good reputation of the University of Innsbruck in the world and are representatives of the welcoming culture inherent to the entire institution. Successful internationalisation of a university can only be achieved if the institution aspires to excellent research and teaching, which is globally competitive in terms of ideas and resources. The internationalisation efforts must be of high quality and relevant, both in the academic as well as in the social dimension. In addition, thinking and acting internationally must become a principle embedded at all levels and in all structural elements of the university. Internationalisation promotes visibility, perception and attractiveness, but also demands openness, diversity and curiosity from the institution itself and from all its members. For the University of Innsbruck and all its members, internationalisation does not constitute a certain state, but rather a conscious process aiming at the comprehensive integration of an international, intercultural or global dimension in all areas of activity of the university – in teaching, research, administration as well as social responsibility ('Third Mission'). In this context, Erasmus+ has a central position as main driver of international mobility for students and staff. For the University of Innsbruck "internationalisation" is more than just a word, it's part of the University's DNA. Mainly because of the location of Innsbruck in the center of Europe and very close to Germany and Italy an international atmosphere is always present. This can be also underlined by numbers: about 40% of the university members, students and staff, come from abroad. Therefore one key aspect of internationalisation is "internationalisation@home" to involve as many stakeholders as possible and all sorts of blended formats. These two central factors - internationalisation@home and blended formats - are greatly forstered and facilitated within the European University Alliance - Aurora - where the UIBK is a proud and engaged part of since 2020.
