Objectives

The aim of the project was to develop a podcast as audio material for basic education and German as a second language courses. The intention was to create a link between the university and society, break down prejudices and implement a participatory format in which educationally disadvantaged women with a migration background could contribute their experiences and interests. Focus groups were used to identify topics, promoting social inclusion in terms of both content and methodology. At the same time, the project aimed to create learning opportunities for all participants – across generations and for those interested in podcasts, trainers and students. The podcast highlighted different perspectives on history, regional and cultural contexts, and mechanisms of exclusionary historiography. In addition, the project aimed to strengthen German language skills, promote self-positioning in historical processes and expand digital skills. Students were also to learn about and apply the podcast as a didactic tool.

Background

The project aimed to establish a connection between historical education, transcultural exchange, digital content and pedagogical practices. The cooperation between the Orient Express association and the University of Cologne enables the application and further development of methodological approaches from oral and public history. Political and historical education is central to promoting inclusion processes and transcultural understanding. It was therefore important that the content conveyed in the podcast had a direct connection to the experiences of the target group – women with a migration background. Focus groups were used to identify historical interests and autobiographical topics, as adult education often lacks content that reflects the learners' lives. There is also a need for co-creative teaching methods and content in basic education and higher education. The project promotes participatory, everyday learning processes, strengthens exchange between educational levels and makes targeted use of digital content as part of pedagogical practices. The podcast serves as a co-creative didactic tool to facilitate access to education and promote self-efficacy.
