Objectives

The aim of the project was to address European sites of the history of democracy for adult education programmes. The focus was on the historical and political-social dynamics of development of democracy in Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic, which were presented in a new digital learning space. This approach is accompanied by a didactic teaching and learning concept that is characterised by the provision of materials and different learning paths.

Background

Starting point was the shared recognition among the partner organisations that the development of democracies is not a linear process, but is marked by ruptures, setbacks and progress. The project aims to make key milestones in the history of democracy visible in specific locations in the everyday environment. Examples include Vienna's Ringstraße in Austria, Národní třída in the Czech Republic and Hambach Castle in Germany. These sites illustrate not only the achievements of democratic movements, but also the ambivalences that accompanied these processes. The project opens up a transnational perspective on the history of democracy through a digital map of places of democratic history and accompanying learning materials. The aim was and is to shed light on the historical, country-specific and political-social dynamics of the development of democracy in Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic and to make them accessible in adult education. Particular consideration was given to the needs of participants in country-specific adult education programmes (primary target group) and multipliers in adult education (secondary target group).
