Objectives

Participation in this project brings substantial benefits and has a positive impact on both education and research. We believe that the expertise, resources, and infrastructure of a single university are insufficient to address the increasing complexity of global challenges or to make a meaningful contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is why engaging in the KA131 programme is essential—it allows us to expand our international collaboration network in education and research. Exposure to diverse educational systems and environments encourages students to broaden their perspectives on learning, enhancing their academic development and future employability. As stated in the European Declaration on Global Education to 2050, VUB is committed to empowering individuals to become active contributors to a world grounded in justice, peace, solidarity, equality, sustainability, and international understanding. The programme supports student and staff exchanges with partner institutions—mainly across Europe—with financial support provided. These exchanges happen in a well-structured and efficient way. The exchanges align closely with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel’s quality framework, which outlines the principles and policies that ensure the excellence of our partnerships. It guarantees that our graduates leave the university with an international outlook, an appreciation for diversity, and strong preparation for working in multicultural environments in Brussels, Belgium, and across Europe. Moreover, staff mobility allows our academic and administrative staff to share their expertise with colleagues at partner universities, promote core VUB values such as free inquiry, and gain valuable experience in intercultural communication, language proficiency, and personal development. These mobility opportunities connect various departments and individuals both within and beyond our European University Alliance, EUTOPIA, which is key to strengthening the alliance and the university as a whole. Within EUTOPIA, partner institutions have jointly committed to a mobility charter, with the goal of achieving at least 100 mobilities between each partner university—demonstrating a shared dedication to deepening international collaboration. Each year we see that the mobilities to and from EUTOPIA destinations are increasing.
