Objectives

The project "Green Dreams" emerged as a natural response to the social, economic, and environmental challenges faced by young people in the Smolyan region – an area marked by mountainous geography, limited opportunities for realization, and increasing depopulation and migration. Our main motivation was to create an innovative, sustainable, and engaging framework through which young people – especially those from vulnerablумения и нагласи, които да им помогнат да останат, да се реализират и да допринасят активно за развитието на своя регион. Като организация с доказан опит в сферата на младежката работа, социаe and marginalized communities – would have a real chance to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to remain in the region, realize their potential, and contribute actively to local development. As an organization with proven experience in youth work, social entrepreneurship, non-formal education, and mobile outreach, we – the association "Young Improvers for Youth Development" – aimed to empower young people from the Smolyan region not only to believe in themselves but also to build concrete capacities for civic engagement, green thinking, and entrepreneurship with a social value. The project was designed as a long-term investment in human capital and local resilience. At its core was a learning-by-doing model based on practical work with nature and the local community, combined with structured training formats. We used tools such as mobile youth teams, workshops, a demonstration greenhouse, institutional meetings, trainings on EU programs, and discussions with experts. All activities were aligned with the mission to transform vulnerability into engagement and passivity into action. The main objectives of the project were: 1. To create a sustainable opportunity for practical and environmental education for young people from vulnerable groups, through engagement in real activities such as growing herbs, building raised beds, composters, and other ecological structures. 2. To enhance social engagement and self-esteem among young people, by involving them in community-impact activities – mobile initiatives in villages, creating youth-friendly spaces, urban greening, and healthy food preparation using local products. 3. To build skills for social entrepreneurship, by introducing youth to real practices – visits to organic shops, herbal packaging workshops, meetings with local entrepreneurs and producers, and participation in charity events and local markets. 4. To promote civic engagement and active citizenship, through dialogue with local authorities, trainings on EU youth policies, participation in debates, and events focused on youth involvement in decision-making. 5. To foster intercultural dialogue and inclusion, involving young people from various ethnic, religious, and social backgrounds – including Bulgarians, Pomaks, Roma, and other minority groups who coexist in the region but rarely interact in an educational context. 6. To build a new generation of young “green ambassadors”, informed, motivated, and prepared to share their knowledge with their peers, as part of a long-term youth empowerment strategy based on sustainability. "Green Dreams" was not just a series of events, but a systemic intervention rooted in our previous experience – from our youth space in Smolyan and the gallery in the underpass, to our mobile teams, summer academies, cultural activities, podcasts with politicians and volunteers, and hands-on ecological fieldwork. All these past initiatives created a solid foundation, which we built upon with "Green Dreams", engaging over 200 participants and establishing partnerships with more than 10 institutions and local organizations. The project directly addressed the strategic priorities of the Erasmus+ programme: inclusion and diversity, green practices, digital transformation, and participation in democratic life. We integrated digital tools such as a knowledge exchange platform, interactive videos, and online newsletters; all activities followed eco criteria – from food to waste; and we developed mechanisms for involving young people with fewer opportunities, including transport and individual support. Through the project we achieved: • The creation of a vibrant learning space with hands-on ecological engagement – herbal greenhouse, demonstration plots, eco-zones. • Deployment of mobile youth teams in small and remote villages. • Implementation of over 30 educational events, including guest speakers and representatives from public authorities. • Increased youth self-confidence, awareness, and engagement, measured through feedback, interviews, and group reflections. • Strengthened cooperation among organizations, institutions, and informal groups, opening new avenues for long-term collaboration. In conclusion, the “Green Dreams” project was our step forward toward a future in which young people in the Rhodopes not only remain but also become engines of development.
