Objectives

The main objective of the project was to equip adult learners, particularly those from marginalized communities—with green skills that enhance their employability and support the transition toward a sustainable labour market. By implementing the project, we aimed to create new educational opportunities that respond to environmental challenges and prepare adults for future professions in the green economy. Specifically, we sought to achieve the following: 1. Research and analysis of environmental skills needed in modern industries and economies, identifying gaps in adult education curricula and labour market requirements. 2. Development of a methodology for creating flexible, high-quality adult education curricula focused on green topics and aligned with employers’ needs. 3. Creation of three new training curricula in environmental education for adult learners—covering practical, industry-related green skills. 4. Implementation of pilot training activities involving 18 adult learners (6 from each partner country) to test and validate the developed curricula. 5. Strengthening the institutional capacity of the partner organizations. 6. Fostering transnational cooperation between Bulgaria, Portugal, and Italy.

Background

We applied for this project in response to the growing need for adult education to adapt to the evolving demands of the labour market, particularly in light of the green transition. The challenges brought by the COVID-19, the economic repercussions of the war in Ukraine, and the urgency of climate change have accelerated the demand for new skills—especially green skills—across Europe. Adults, particularly those from marginalized communities, are among the most vulnerable groups in this transition and require targeted support to improve their employability and participation in sustainable economic development. The project aimed to address several key needs: - Lack of green skills training in adult education curricula across partner countries. - Limited access to retraining opportunities for adults seeking to transition into environmentally relevant job sectors. - Insufficient integration of environmental awareness and sustainable development principles in lifelong learning. - Need for flexible, high-quality and recognized learning opportunities tailored to adult learners and aligned with labour market needs. - Capacity-building needs of adult education providers in implementing innovative and environmentally focused training.
