Objectives

The project aimed to enhance GDPR awareness and compliance among NGOs and adult learners across Europe. The primary objective was to educate individuals and organizations on safeguarding personal data and understanding their rights and obligations under GDPR. This included providing tools and methodologies to help NGOs comply with legal requirements and protect their members' and stakeholders’ sensitive information effectively. We sought to empower adult learners by improving their digital literacy and eSafety skills, enabling them to recognize and address data protection risks in their personal and professional lives. The project also aimed to foster transparency and trust in data processing practices by promoting public awareness about data protection rules, safeguards, and individual rights. Through the development of a comprehensive Guidebook, a digital knowledge hub, and targeted training sessions, the project focused on creating accessible, user-friendly resources. These outputs were designed to facilitate GDPR compliance, promote responsible data management, and support the digital transformation of organizations and individuals while ensuring safety and legal adherence.

Background

The PrivacyFirst project was conceived to address critical needs in Europe concerning personal data protection. In a digitized world, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic, data breaches became increasingly common, highlighting gaps in GDPR awareness and compliance. EU statistics showed that while 67% of Europeans were aware of GDPR, less than 20% knew how to report a breach or understand the legal framework. This project aimed to bridge this gap through practical tools and education. Many adults and NGOs struggled with digital literacy and eSafety, lacking resources to process personal data securely. NGOs, which handle sensitive information, often lacked the knowledge to comply with GDPR, risking penalties and harm to their stakeholders. PrivacyFirst provided tailored guidance, and training methodology to address these challenges. Personal data protection, a fundamental human right under the EU Charter, required greater awareness and empowerment. By developing a comprehensive Guidebook, a digital knowledge hub, and training sessions, the project supported digital safety, GDPR compliance, and a culture of trust and transparency across Europe.
