Objectives

The project aimed to build upon the outcomes of the Conference on the Future of Europe, the results of consultations within the 9th cycle of the EU Youth Dialogue on the subtheme of Education and Information, and the achievements and insights gained from young people’s participation during the European Year of Youth. It recognized the importance of equipping young people with the skills needed to achieve their aspirations while ensuring that the green and digital transitions are socially fair and just. This need was particularly emphasized in the project's goals. The project also sought to contribute to the European Commission’s initiative to declare 2023 and 2024 as the European Year of Skills and aimed to support the implementation of the "European Skills Agenda for sustainable competitiveness, social fairness, and resilience." The goal was to promote a mindset of reskilling and upskilling to enhance young people's employability in line with current labour market demands. One of our primary objectives was to address the specific needs and perspectives of young people, as expressed in the dialogues and consultations, and to improve their skills relevant to the labour market. This would empower them to take control of their futures, unlock their full potential, and strengthen their socioeconomic resilience—essential for active and meaningful engagement in civic, socioeconomic, and political life. Specifically, young people who participated in the project’s activities and workshops had the opportunity to improve their soft skills and develop key competencies, including independent living and financial literacy, digital and media literacy, critical and analytical thinking (such as entrepreneurial thinking, problem-solving, conflict resolution, advocacy, and lobbying), and project management. As a result, participants gained new knowledge, enhanced their existing skills, and developed new ones to better navigate labor market transitions, align with their professional goals, advance their careers, and take advantage of opportunities arising from the green and digital transitions. Additionally, our second objective was to bring together young people and policymakers to contribute to the EU Youth Dialogue, encouraging the expression of young people’s views and concerns. This aimed to foster a sense of belonging to the society and provide a safe space for non-formal education. Furthermore, during the 3-day mobility event, participants engaged in meaningful dialogue with policymakers and decision-makers, sharing their opinions and empowering themselves to develop solutions and recommendations on employability, education, training, and lifelong learning. These discussions aimed to shape youth policies at both national and European levels. Participants interacted directly with key policymakers, including Mr. Stelios Orfanos, Senior Educational Planning Officer at the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports; Mr. Christos Tanteles, Senior Officer in the Department of Labour Relations, Social Policy & Human Resource Development at the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce; Ms. Savvia Chourre, Labour Officer at the Department of Labour in the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance; Mr. Stelios Polidorou , Organizational Secretary of the Private Association in the Cyprus Workers Confederation; and Ms. Christiana Xenofontos, Vice-President of the European Youth Forum. This engagement enabled participants to identify systemic challenges and gaps in education, training, and lifelong learning that impact youth employability. They also recognized areas for improvement and deepened their understanding of the European Skills Agenda, the European Youth Strategy, the National Youth Strategy, the EU Youth Dialogue, the Youth Goals, and civil and social dialogue mechanisms. As a result, participants developed transferable skills such as critical thinking, analytical skills, interpersonal communication, and creativity. They were actively involved in the democratic life of Cyprus, participating in debates on topics aligned with Youth Goals (YG), particularly YG7 “Quality Employment for All,” YG8 “Quality Learning,” and YG9 “Space and Participation for All,” as well as their dialogue mechanisms. Following the mobility phase, CYC transformed the ideas gathered into concrete policy recommendations, which were presented to our member organizations during our general assembly in November 2024. A relevant policy paper will be submitted for consideration at our 2025 General Assembly, where it will be voted upon and used to guide policymaking and advocacy for youth rights and improved youth policies. Moreover, post-project, CYC will disseminate the project’s results and outcomes to relevant stakeholders and policymakers, advocating for the adoption of young people's suggestions in agendas related to youth participation and broader youth issues at the local and national levels.
