Objectives

The overall aim of the project was to prepare youth leaders, youth workers and young people to address pressing socio-ecological issues, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to inspire similar efforts in their communities. The project focused on promoting democratic values, climate action, and the capacity to recognize and counteract populist and extremist narratives that may exploit environmental concerns. By involving youth leaders in three Training Courses (TC) and young people in a Youth exchange (YE) each with a specific thematic focus, the project sought to build a holistic understanding of sustainable activism. Specific objectives included: Empowering Youth to Promote Critical Thinking Throughout all activities, one primary goal was to encourage critical thinking and equip participants with the tools to become multipliers This objective responded to the need for young people to be informed and vigilant about socio-political narratives influencing climate and environmental discourse. Exploring the Relationship Between Environmentalism and Right-Wing Populism The TC and YE aimed to expose participants to the ways environmental issues are sometimes co-opted by extremist agendas. This included learning about historical ties between right-wing ideologies and environmental narratives and how to differentiate genuine sustainability from exclusionary policies disguised as eco-activism. Promoting Climate Positivity and mental health Later activities centred around sustainable practices, particularly in youth mobility, and building climate positivity. This approach supported participants in overcoming “climate anxiety” and building constructive, hope-oriented attitudes in their activism. Multiplying Knowledge and Best Practices Each TC included a practical part so participants could pass on what they learned, supporting the development of democratic and sustainable values among broader youth groups in their local or regional environments. These goals were realized through four carefully designed activities that guided participants through a progression of awareness, knowledge building, and application in real-world contexts.
