Our aim was to develop a practical methodological material based on evidence-based practices, which elaborates selected topics of sex education in a way that teachers can use them in teaching the above mentioned target groups. The project activities assisted educational professionals to develop their knowledge and skills in using evidence-based practices in sex education. As a result, the quality of achieving the support measures in education and supporting educational professionals in working with students with special education needs was increased.
Many researches confirm that school sex education for students with intellectual disabilities and/or on the autism spectrum is inadequate. The content of sex education for students with special education needs is mostly focused on biological topics (e.g. male and female body, menstruation) and does not include topics such as intimacy, pleasure, different gender and sexuality identities, pregnancy, contraception and masturbation. The teaching of sex education itself is also problematic, as teachers have minimal tools, resources and skills to provide sex education to students with special education needs. Thus, we tried to meet the needs of educators to get practical methodological material with examples of good practice, but also of people with disabilities to fulfil their rights to information, sexual and reproductive rights. Accessible information, support and education in the area of sexuality fundamentally reduces the risks of vulnerability of people with intellectual disability and on the autism spectrum.
