The prerequisites at the University of Vechta are and have always been challenging: Without having a study programme with an obligatory semester stay abroad and with the majority of the student body being teacher training or social service students, it is not easy to motivate the students for an international experience. To increase the attractiveness of a stay abroad, the university introduced a mobility window in each study programme on bachelor and master level in 2012. But structure alone does not increase mobility numbers and does not automatically change the narrative of the university concerning the importance of internationalisation for the later employability. The increase of the mobility numbers was and still is one main objective of our Erasmus+ projects as it is the major means to increase the visibility of internationalisation at the university. The introduction of blended intensive programmes was seen “as an icebreaker” to re-install the enthusiasm for mobilities after the pandemic. But more importantly it was also seen as a shift in internationalisation to a more substantial and sustainable way to internationalize the curricula of the different fields of study and thus also support the shift to a narrative supporting the internationalisation of the university.
