Objectives

By implementing the Erasmus+ project, the University of Greifswald aims to strengthen the international mobility of its students, doctoral candidates, researchers, and staff in a sustainable way, thereby consistently advancing its internationalisation strategy. The University of Greifswald is one of the oldest universities in the German-speaking world and the second oldest in the Baltic Sea region. Its geographical location on the Baltic coast has shaped it from the very beginning: cross-border contacts, exchange, and cooperation are part of its identity. On this basis, the University is committed to openness, diversity, and international cooperation. Erasmus+ represents a cornerstone in this context, serving both to expand the University’s international profile and to contribute actively to the European Education and Research Area. The project primarily seeks to increase both the number and the quality of mobilities. The focus is on enabling more students, doctoral candidates, researchers, and staff to gain experience abroad. Particular attention is given to the inclusion of groups that have been underrepresented so far, in order to promote equal opportunities and inclusiveness. Stays abroad help participants deepen their language skills, subject knowledge, digital competences, and intercultural awareness. At the same time, they strengthen leadership skills, independence, and awareness of sustainability—key qualifications that are indispensable in a globalised world of work and research. Furthermore, the project is intended to improve the quality of teaching, learning, and research through international networking. The University of Greifswald strives to educate its graduates as excellent, internationally connected, and globally responsible professionals. At the same time, the exchange of teachers and researchers is expected to generate new impulses for innovative approaches in teaching and research. A further important effect is internationalisation@home: returning participants bring their experiences back into the University and thereby enrich the entire academic community. Another central goal of the project is the further development of strategic partnerships. The University of Greifswald maintains a strong network of long-standing collaborations in the Baltic Sea region and across Europe. Erasmus+ is designed to strengthen these partnerships, while also creating new ones—particularly with institutions in structurally weaker regions. In this way, the University contributes to fair and inclusive mobility and at the same time enhances its own visibility and attractiveness within the European Higher Education Area. The University of Greifswald also sees itself as a societal actor. Through the project it seeks to promote openness, intercultural dialogue, and a European identity within the university community. The University deliberately sets a sign against xenophobia and tendencies of social isolation. Intercultural training, preparation for stays abroad, and the inclusion of international guests contribute to a vibrant international community in Greifswald. Moreover, sustainability is embedded in all mobility processes to ensure that Erasmus+ develops in an ecologically responsible way. The objectives of the University of Greifswald within the project are closely aligned with the goals of the European Education Area. These include embedding mobility as an integral part of teaching, learning, research, and university management, ensuring EU-wide recognition of academic achievements, and promoting language skills, digital competences, and sustainability. At the same time, the implementation of the project contributes actively to the priorities of the European Renewed Agenda, in particular competence development, inclusion, networking, innovation, and efficiency in higher education. In summary, the University of Greifswald seeks to use the opportunities of the Erasmus+ project to significantly increase the mobility of its members, structurally and sustainably anchor internationalisation, expand strategic partnerships, and make an active contribution to an open, diverse, and future-oriented European Education Area.
