Objectives

After the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated decline in mobility, the main objective of this project was to increase mobility numbers again. Thanks to two additional approvals from the DAAD within the framework of fund reallocations, the initially approved 425 mobilities were not only reached but even exceeded, with a total of 507 mobilities. This represents an increase of 82 mobilities, or almost 20 % (19,29%). All mobilities that could still be carried out during the project’s duration were funded through this project’s resources, making the budget highly efficient. However, nearly half of the overhead funds (OS) – specifically €45,919.98 out of a total of €105,780.00, or 43.41% of all overhead funds – had to be transferred to mobility in order to achieve this increase. A particularly positive impact on the expansion of mobility figures came from the membership in the SEA-EU university alliance. Thanks to a wide range of “Blended Intensive Programmes” (BIPs) and Staff Weeks within the consortium, there was a significant increase in short-term mobilities (BIP-SMS) and staff mobility (STT). Had there been more financial planning security, the numbers could have been further expanded. The collaboration within the SEA-EU consortium also significantly advanced the internationalisation of the university, for example, through the development of innovative teaching models like the Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs), the introduction of a framework for micro-credentials, and the opening of existing courses to the entire consortium. Moreover, significant progress was made in the areas of inclusion, sustainability, and digitalisation, while the university’s external visibility was greatly enhanced through high-profile international events. SEA-EU also contributed significantly to increasing the visibility of the Erasmus+ program both within and outside the university. This was achieved through the active involvement of rectors, vice rectors, and the establishment of stakeholder councils (students, ports, cities, external partners), as well as by expanding mobility, particularly staff mobility. Through the broad involvement of staff at all levels, the understanding of Erasmus+ and its specific needs within the university was significantly strengthened. Many obstacles that had previously hindered implementation were successfully cleared. As all of the project's key objectives have been achieved (expansion of mobility, increased visibility of Erasmus+ within and outside the university, removal of previous internal structural barriers), the 2023 project is one of the most successful Erasmus+ projects undertaken by Kiel University to date.
