By implementing the Saxon consortium project as part of the Erasmus+ programme in higher education, we pursued the goal of making a sustainable contribution to the internationalisation, modernisation and quality improvement of higher education. The focus was on promoting the learning mobility of students, teachers and university staff on an equal footing in order to strengthen their international, professional and personal skills and further expand European cooperation in the field of education. Specifically, we wanted the project to: Increasing mobility and international exchange: We aimed to enable as many students and university staff as possible to participate in stays abroad in order to promote intercultural skills, foreign language skills and employability. A particular focus was placed on involving participants from disadvantaged groups in order to ensure equal opportunities and inclusion. Establishing innovative learning formats: By developing and implementing blended intensive programmes (BIPs) and establishing group trips to international partner institutions, we wanted to create new, low-threshold mobility formats that combine physical and virtual components. The aim was to facilitate participation in international learning experiences and to test innovative didactic approaches, thereby perhaps also increasing students' willingness to engage in long-term mobility. Promoting sustainability and green change: Another goal was to raise awareness of sustainable mobility and promote environmentally friendly means of travel. As office employees, we wanted to contribute to green change by embedding sustainable practices in the organisation and implementation of mobility activities. Since it has become technically possible, only truly necessary documents are still in paper form; everything else is digital. Building bridges between higher education, research and innovation: The project aimed to intensify cooperation between universities, research institutions and other partners in order to promote innovation and strengthen the international dimension of higher education. Achieving multiplier effects and sustainable impact: We wanted to ensure that the experience and results gained in the project would flow back into the institutions, contribute to the further development of curricula and serve as best practice examples for further projects. The dissemination of the project results and the sustainable anchoring of the goals achieved were therefore of central importance. To this end, there was a regular exchange of experiences with all participating universities, as well as meetings with other German university consortia. In summary, the project pursued the overarching goal of increasing the attractiveness and quality of the European higher education area, expanding participation in international mobility and contributing to the strategic goals of the Erasmus+ programme – particularly in the areas of inclusion, sustainability, digitalisation and innovation.
