Objectives

HAW Hamburg is known in the academic community for its practice-oriented approach. The guiding principle of HAW Hamburg is “HAW Hamburg. Because you can make a difference.” It emphasizes the agency of students and university members to develop sustainable solutions to meet today’s and tomorrow’s major global challenges. In this context, the International Office team and colleagues at the faculties actively promote the internationalization of HAW Hamburg, both internally and externally. A central task is the implementation of the Erasmus+ program. Following a complete staff turnover in 2023 in the Erasmus+ area (study abroad and internships abroad), the head of the International Office and another staff member temporarily took over responsibilities to ensure the continuation of Erasmus+ mobility. The Erasmus+ team is supported at faculty level by four Student Exchange Coordinators (SECs). In the Erasmus+ 2023 project, we pursued two main objectives: Ensuring and implementing study abroad opportunities despite significant structural challenges These challenges included a cyberattack in January 2023, which paralyzed all servers, disrupted the system, and caused the loss of data and email communications, as well as a complete staff turnover in the Erasmus+ team (new head of the International Office, new coordinators for SMS and SMP activities). Ensuring the quality of mobility measures and inter-institutional cooperation Under these difficult conditions, continuous student support was maintained, and the processes for SMS and SMP mobilities were carried out in a flexible manner to ensure the realization of the mobility programs despite adverse circumstances. The Erasmus+ program at HAW Hamburg was implemented in accordance with ECHE regulations, to the extent possible under the given circumstances. For this cohort, particular emphasis was placed on inclusion, diversity, green travel, as well as on the expansion and (re)strengthening of digital workflows.
