Our experience at school shows that students struggle to distinguish between real and fake news. This project aimed to demonstrate how misinformation shapes their opinions and thinking. Students developed awareness of the consequences of fake news, which affects people of all ages. The project highlighted its influence on personal opinion formation and decision-making in areas such as politics and social issues. We sought to expand knowledge in several key areas. First, media literacy, as many students lack the skills to critically evaluate online information, making them vulnerable to fake news. Second, intercultural differences in news consumption, comparing how Italy, Spain, and Germany perceive and handle misinformation. Third, critical thinking skills, helping students differentiate between credible and misleading sources. Finally, responsible digital citizenship, encouraging ethical and informed behavior online. In summary, we aimed to foster international cooperation and equip students and teachers with effective strategies to combat misinformation.
The Erasmus+ project ‘Another Fake another Fact? - Flying Monkeys on the Moon’ was launched to tackle the growing challenge of fake news in our digital age. As teachers, we witness its effects in classrooms, where opinions are often shaped by unverified social media posts. Recognizing that media literacy is crucial across generations, we implemented this project to address misinformation’s influence on public opinion and politics in Europe. Fake news can undermine democracy, erode trust in institutions, and deepen social divides. Its global impact made an international approach essential, leading us to collaborate with partner schools in Granada (Spain) and Bergamo (Italy). The rapid spread of misinformation through digital platforms necessitates critical thinking and media education. Past and present events—such as the European elections (2024), US elections (2016, 2024) or elections in Romania and Austria (both 2024), and upcoming elections in Germany—highlight fake news’ harmful effects. Our project aimed to equip students with tools to critically assess information, fostering informed decision-making in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
