Objectives

The aim was to develop (1) exemplary learning modules for flexible and engaging initial and continuing education, and (2) create XR templates for further learning modules that can be used directly and adapted to other subject areas. The free and open-source software H5P (https://h5p.org/) for creating interactive learning content, which is already used by over 17,000 websites worldwide, was chosen as the technical basis for the templates. By the end of the project, the following results should be available: - At least 5 prototype XR templates and at least 10 fully developed learning modules in the field of the energy transition that meet the above requirements. - An evaluation of these learning units in real-world training and further education events. - At least 3 XR templates should be submitted to the H5P Group for publication and made available as Open Educational Resources. - A guide for teachers on how to adapt, modify and use the templates for their own teaching needs. - A guide for SMEs on how this approach can be used to provide technical support for educational initiatives and to develop them dynamically.

Background

A key problem at present is the shortage of skilled workers capable of setting up, monitoring, managing and optimising the complex systems emerging everywhere, for example in the energy transition. This requires training and further education programmes that not only present complex issues in an understandable way, but can also be easily adapted and developed in light of dynamic developments. Extended Reality (XR – encompassing Virtual and Augmented Reality) has proven helpful in recent years for visualising complex and interconnected objects. However, previous XR projects have remained at the level of individual solutions, which require significant resources and the involvement of specialist software companies. However, there is also a need for digital learning modules that - Can be used for initial and continuing education in online, hybrid or face-to-face settings - utilise Extended Reality where it is helpful for the learning objectives, but are not limited to it - Can be created, modified and further developed by the teachers themselves using freely available tools - Can be easily deployed on common learning platforms. The project aimed to develop such a solution.
