The overall objective is primarily to improve international and inter-European understanding between the participating associations, to set new standards, and to develop new forms of exchange in order to strengthen international work and cohesion within the international youth hostel family. This is more important than ever in these times. The following overarching themes and objectives were identified: education for sustainable development, historical and political education, interculturality, healthy upbringing, identity formation and life planning, and, of course, the promotion of the European idea. These overarching themes are generally taken into account in every mobility program, although each specialized program/meeting naturally has its own focus. The aim of our youth exchanges is to enable young people from Europe to get to know each other better and learn about different countries and cultural characteristics. This also involves comparing perspectives on specific topics and discussing them (even controversially). The challenge, but also the uniqueness, of our programs is a mix of educational offerings, joint activities, and excursions that open up new perspectives for the participants. A space is created in which participants can learn from each other and expand their intercultural and professional skills. This expansion promotes education for sustainable development and historical and political education by helping participants to better understand both their own identity and the realities of life in other cultures. Direct encounters with people and the local environment help to develop a deep understanding of different ways of life. However, these special formats also present challenges. The diversity of the participants' backgrounds and expectations requires sensitive handling and didactic adjustments. Language barriers, different ways of working, and logistical planning across national borders are further challenges that require a high degree of flexibility and intercultural competence. At the same time, promoting the European idea and providing targeted support for participants' life planning and development lays the foundation for a strong European identity. The open program modules allow young people to participate in the planning and design of the program, creating opportunities for interaction and self-efficacy.
