As part of the Erasmus+ project, we had clear objectives based on the values of the wannseeFORUM foundation. Our central aim was to enable young people from Berlin and Europe to exchange ideas and actively participate in European processes. We wanted our educational programmes to help promote democratic values, human rights and social commitment. Our main objectives include: 1. promoting European values: the European Convention on Human Rights and the EU motto ‘united in diversity’ form the basis of our work. We wanted to convey to young people the importance of standing up for human rights, democracy, equality and participation. Our aim was to help the participants not only understand these values, but also to represent them in their everyday lives. 2. active participation of young people: By involving young people in decision-making processes at an early stage, we promote their ability to participate and their political self-confidence. They should learn to actively participate in social and political processes and demand their rights. 3. artistic and methodological education: We wanted to introduce the participants to artistic forms of expression that enable them to express themselves individually and creatively. In combination with political education, this should provide them with tools to communicate their concerns and positions. 4 European networking: A central aim was to give young people the opportunity to network across Europe. We took part in various European initiatives, including the creation of the European Youth Work Agenda and the Bonn Process. Participation in the Council of Europe's Youth Action Week also strengthened this networking. 5 Inclusion and diversity: Our work stands for openness, diversity and equal rights for all. The aim of the project was to give all young people, regardless of their origin, religion or social status, access to our educational programmes. 6. Take responsibility by engaging with the history of Europe: The mass murder of European Jews and other population groups carried out by Germany and supported by its allies characterises the history of Europe. The Nazi terror regime and the crimes it perpetrated were supported, advocated and actively supported by large sections of the German and Austrian population. They participated in it and carried it out. This gives rise to a special responsibility for Europe and its values today. We wanted to face up to and fulfil this responsibility. We carried out projects that focussed on the history and aftermath of National Socialism. We support young people, especially after 7 October 2023, in recognising anti-semitic and conspiracy theories, opposing right-wing extremists and taking action against the relativisation of Nazi crimes. It was particularly important to us to include participants with experience of racism. 7. Strengthening f self-confidence: The wannseeFORUM Foundation pursues an emancipatory approach to education. Our aim is to empower young people in the world in which they live with their needs and in dealing with the issues that concern them. They are at the centre of our work. We accompany the participants on their path to maturity and support them when necessary. Within the scope of our possibilities as a youth education centre, we created places where the seemingly natural could be de-legitimised, where claims to power and authority could be critically questioned. We believe that encouraging young people to see themselves as actors in a democratic society excludes manipulation, agitation and indoctrination. With these goals in mind, we wanted to encourage young people to become active citizens in a diverse European society.
