Our aim was to provide transformational educational experiences to a broad and diverse group of young people. Through UWC short courses, participants develop the skills needed to adapt to change and to contribute to their communities as active citizens. The courses focused on four core goals: Sustainability: linking with the European Youth Strategy and Green Deal, encouraging young people to see sustainability as both an opportunity and a responsibility. Engagement: supporting democratic participation and active citizenship through participatory learning. Connection: creating international networks that continue through alumni platforms and the wider UWC community. Empowerment: strengthening communication, confidence, intercultural competence, and critical thinking. These short courses extend UWC values—such as intercultural understanding, respect, integrity, and responsibility—to a much wider group of young people than traditional two-year school placements. They enable participants to explore sustainability and diversity, both central themes of the UWC movement, and to begin shaping their own futures. To ensure impact beyond the course itself, we introduced a fellowship programme offering mentoring, training, and support for follow-up projects. We also invested in building a pool of trained volunteers and staff, and in developing partnerships and resource-sharing platforms to strengthen the international community of practice around short courses.
