Objectives

According to the “Digital in 2022 Report”(WeAreSocial), the overview of Europe in digital statistics was as follows; population is 849.5 million, mobile phone connections are 1.09 billion, internet users are 711.3 million, active social media users are 470.5 million. Besides, %78 of the youth population in Europe is active social media users. In the direction of those data, it can be said that the users of social media are pretty much and as well as the users are rising in every passing year. We searched and realized that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the percentage of social media users increased rapidly. On the other hand, we noticed that young people were the most important group who were spending their time on social media instead of in real life. It is not possible to stay away from technology and the internet, but as humans, we need to establish a balance between our use of information tools and our real lives. Because, excessive use of social media causes depression, social anxiety, less life satisfaction, low academic performance, mental-physical problems, addiction, and cyberbullying. There is no need for any digital competence to use social media. In addition, using social media does not develop digital competence. However, we know from research that people with digital competence use social media more effectively and in line with their purpose. The research and concrete situations explained above motivated us to do this project. At the same time, since the problem is global and requires global solutions, it caused us to do this international project. We aimed to raise awareness about the disadvantages of excessive use of social media and increase the competencies required for effective use. We taught that the solution is showing young people alternative ways of spending time instead of social media and increasing their digital competencies. Our objectives were: 1. Creating awareness about excessive and misuse of social media 2. Improving digital competencies/digital literacy, promoting creative use of ICT, encouraging collaboration through ICT 3. Exploring alternative ways of spending time instead of social media 4. Creating awareness of cyberbullying and overcoming ways 5. Improving communication/language skills, personal development, social harmony, innovation, creativity 6. Providing opportunities for intercultural understanding/European citizenship
