Our project "Hand in Hand for A More Peaceful Society," aimed to address and combat discrimination and prejudice among youth from diverse backgrounds across Europe. Recognizing the vast cultural, religious, linguistic, and ethnic diversity present in today's world, we aimed to mitigate the prejudices that often arise from these differences, particularly among young people. According to UNHCR reports, the world faced the largest migration crisis since the Second World War, with 1.1 million official asylum applications to 144 countries in the first half of 2022. Participating countries in our project (Spain, Italy, Türkiye, Germany, Croatia, Macedonia, and Greece) are notably affected by racism due to their geographical locations or the volume of immigration they receive. The primary objectives of our project were multifaceted and aimed at fostering a more inclusive and understanding society: -We sought to enhance young people's understanding of the needs of refugees and migrants and improve their ability to differentiate between various types of migrants. -Our goal was to reduce prejudices and xenophobia among young people and youth leaders towards foreigners. -We aimed to raise awareness about EU citizenship and its key aspects among young people and youth workers. -By improving empathy skills, we hoped to help young people better understand and relate to the experiences of others. -We aimed to show young people that differences in culture, religion, language, race, and social status are a source of richness. -Developing a sense of respect for differences among young people was a key objective. We aimed to challenge and break down prejudices related to religion, language, race, appearance, and social position among participants. To achieve these objectives, we engaged participants in a variety of group activities, workshops, and animations that fostered empathy and understanding. These activities were designed to help young people: - By simulating experiences and promoting discussions, we helped participants understand the challenges faced by refugees and migrants. - Through interactive sessions, we encouraged participants to reflect on and question their own prejudices and xenophobic tendencies. - Educational sessions were held to increase awareness about the rights and responsibilities associated with EU citizenship. -We facilitated a space for open dialogue and mutual learning. This allowed participants to share their own experiences and learn from others, fostering a sense of solidarity and mutual respect. Through these efforts, we hoped to empower young people to become advocates for tolerance and understanding in their own communities, ultimately contributing to a more harmonious and peaceful world.
