Objectives

We have successfully implemented the Erasmus+ project “Empowerment for climate and environmental protection” with three activities. The aim was to enable young people to act independently and competently on the topic of climate and environmental protection and to work on this through an exchange of experiences with young people from other EU countries, so that experiences and ideas on climate and environmental protection are created for youth work. In order to make this possible in a special learning atmosphere, we chose three places that make the diversity of natural regions in Europe tangible and enable a unique learning setting: These were a medieval castle in the Alps, traditional sailing ships on the Baltic Sea and the experience of winter in Finland Lapland. The two chosen Erasmus+ priorities and the resulting goals formed the basis for the program of three activities: 1. Environment and climate protection: - Understand and address climate and environmental protection as a need and issue for young people - Experience with environmental situations in three different regions of Europe (Alps, Baltic Sea, Arctic region). - Bringing the positions of young people into the discourse in dialogue with politicians and environmental experts 2. Quality and innovation in youth work: - Develop ideas for youth work on the topic of climate protection through the exchange of young people from four EU countries and try out methods - Strengthen resilience among young people in the climate crisis - Make youth encounters holistically climate-friendly in terms of travel, nutrition and procurement The following objectives were selected for the three activities: 1. Activity “Climate camp in the Alps” Gain an understanding of the connections between mountains, water and forests and the influence of these factors on the climate Imparting specialist knowledge through climate and environmental experts and practical implementation of the learning units. A variety of methods and the special atmosphere of a medieval castle are intended to create an outstanding learning environment and an environment for exciting methods of youth encounters (workshops, expert lectures, excursions and adventurous experiences) 2nd activity: “Climate sail on the Baltic Sea” Through life at sea, the participants gained a new perspective on the environmental situation of the seas. The participants learn what it is like to live together in the confined space of a historic ship and to endure problems. By cooking vegetarian meals together, they learned how to eat in a climate-friendly and delicious way. They strengthened each other and developed a resilience that did not leave them hopeless but motivated them to take action. This became particularly clear through the many personal conversations and the spiritual offerings (evening prayers). The participants learned through simulation games (COP simulation) and other methods that shaping a climate-friendly future represents a challenge for society as a whole and requires the commitment of as many people as possible. 3. Activity: “Young leaders environmental training” The participants are committed and motivated to continue to be involved in climate and environmental protection in youth work in the future and to learn new methods and forms of conversation. They discuss the situation of young people in the climate crisis with politicians, theologians and climate scientists and profile their position. They experienced the peculiarities of the arctic region of Lapland and the environmental conditions there. They exchange ideas about methods for climate and environmental education for youth work.
