The most important objectives were essentially three: Increase awareness about oppressive states of the individual and society. Use non-formal educational methods to share ideas and come up with solutions against oppression and discrimination in participating countries to support the development into a less discriminatory and oppressive society (locally and globally). Learn and share new forms of expression as a means of self-expression, both verbal and non-verbal. We initiated this activity as Youth Exchange to critically discuss and have a positive impact on individuals over the topic of oppression and privilege. We took our participant to a project that provoked a reflection related to their own state of oppression, with a particular focus on the condition of oppression of the other. We decided to write an application for a project to fight against discrimination and oppression, focusing on theater and arts to foster creativity, self-expression, and cultural exchange. The fundamental idea behind the project was that individuals who have a clear understanding of their own sense of oppression and privilege can develop a stronger level of perception when it comes to unjust treatment suffered by others. In other words, we believed that individuals with introspective intelligence who reflected on their experience of oppression and privilege would have more empathy towards other individuals and would not exercise authority or power in an unjust way on them. The main outcome of the project was to support participants in developing and impersonating, by acting out, a character called Alter-Hero, which was the result of the reflection of their own experiences in relation to a state of oppression and privileges. Once participants created their own character, they used it as a disguise to experience and investigate realities that were different from theirs, but where the same nature of oppression took place. The second outcome was a final performance with a live audience, where participants brought their creations to life and interacted with other characters and, therefore, other stories. We wanted to achieve a space in which participants could share stories about “oppression and privilege.” An oppressed individual is someone who is subjected to an unjust or cruel exercise of authority and power. We believe that everyone, at a certain point in their life, is subjected to a state of oppression, and that this collective negative experience could play a positive role in the recognition and fight against discrimination. Therefore, we aimed to inspire participants to observe oppression and recognize the need to fight against it.
