Objectives

This project was initiated as a youth exchange to increase awareness about media literacy among young people, prevent individuals from becoming victims of fake content on social media, and develop related skills as well as critical thinking. We believed that experience in the strategies behind the construction and manipulation of information could provide participants with the fundamentals of media literacy, enhancing their ability to understand and express thoughts, feelings, and facts while developing critical thinking skills. We aimed to achieve the objective of tackling disinformation through the coordination of an educational program that included non-formal and experiential learning methodologies, implemented by the hosting organisation and partner organisations. Participants were considered media producers and an active part of the information system they lived in. They prepared and took part in activities that provided them with tools and techniques used to spread disinformation through the media, gaining first hand understanding of how and why fake news is effective. We are aware that cultural exchange and the experience gained by the organisations are extremely valuable, so the fundamental idea behind organising the youth exchange was that, during the project, participants would take an active role by sharing and contributing to the cognitive processes of the program on Media Literacy, while having the opportunity to share good practices, prepare, and lead related workshops. Another point was that people from various backgrounds and countries, having grown up in different environments, view the same situations through the prism of their experiences, providing an opportunity for everyone to come together and bring new perspectives or work through them collaboratively. Ultimately, we sought to encourage openness to critical and constructive intercultural dialogue, as we considered it the foundation for further learning. We also aimed to implement activities and ideas developed in the context of previous KA1 and KA2 initiatives, specifically the KA2 "Mainstreaming Media Literacy and Critical Thinking," which provided a basic toolkit and starting point, developed by some members of the informal group and one of the partner organisations. In short, our specific aims were to: - Increase awareness of media literacy, both as conscious consumers and producers of media. - Develop participants' critical thinking skills, particularly in relation to fake news and digital activities. - Enhance participants' technical competencies and relevant skill sets related to information use, enabling them to deconstruct and identify the objectives behind specific stories and to contextualise them effectively. - Use non-formal educational methods to brainstorm and share solutions against disinformation. - Create an understanding why and how democracy and EU values are connected with critical thinking and social media consumption. - Create networking connections for youth that could spring future international activities between partner organisations and others involved. - Strengthen cooperation among international youth. We decided to apply for Erasmus+ because we consider the fight against fake news a priority for our society and chose to take action against it, pursuing our European values for a transparent and healthy democracy. We want to empower and educate young people through the use of NFE methods as we believed that together with experiential learning it was one of the most effective ways to achieve our goals.
