Objectives

Europe is facing several sustainability challenges such as climate change, energy transition, and environmental degradation. These challenges not only impact the economy and the environment but also the well-being of individuals and communities, particularly vulnerable groups such as youth with fewer opportunities. Eurostat estimates that 13.148 million persons in the EU or 15% were unemployed in December 2022, in the candidates to EU countries such as Turkey, North Macedonia and Serbia the situation is even worst. The current economic and environmental challenges in Europe highlight an urgent need for concrete initiatives that address the issues facing young people, especially in terms of creating sustainable social enterprises. With a lack of job opportunities and financial instability, many young people face social exclusion and a limited ability to participate in sustainable development initiatives, leading to economic and social inequalities. In addition, young people often lack the necessary skills and knowledge to actively participate in sustainable development initiatives. This can be due to a lack of access to education and training, as well as limited awareness of the importance of sustainable development. As a result, young people may not be equipped to contribute to the creation and implementation of sustainable development policies and practices. Vulnerable groups such as youth with fewer opportunities are especially impacted by sustainability challenges. These young people often face additional barriers such as discrimination, poverty, and social exclusion, which can further limit their ability to participate in sustainable development initiatives. To address this issue, initiatives that specifically target these groups and provide them with the necessary support to overcome these barriers and actively contribute to sustainable development are needed. Therefore, the project aimed to empower and equip youth workers with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to create sustainable social enterprises that not only address environmental challenges but also generate social and economic benefits. Through the proposed training course, preparatory and follow-up activities, the project provided youth workers with the necessary knowledge and resources to train young people on sustainable business practices, including topics such as energy efficiency, waste reduction, and social entrepreneurship. By finally targeting youth with fewer opportunities, the project aimed to address social and economic inequalities while fostering a culture of sustainable development. Project Objectives: To enhance the capacity of youth workers to engage and empower young people with sustainable development skills and knowledge. To promote sustainable development practices among young people, particularly those with fewer opportunities, to contribute to a more resilient and equitable society. To facilitate cross-cultural learning and collaboration among youth workers from different European countries, sharing best practices and innovative ideas. To empower youth workers and youth leaders to implement employability programs and social entrepreneurship projects for young people with fewer opportunities Project Activities: Online needs assessment to gather information about the current knowledge and skills of youth workers regarding sustainable development, as well as their training needs. Online preparatory workshop to introduce the project, finalize partnership agreements, and share relevant resources and materials. Online language and cultural preparation activities for participants to enhance their communication and intercultural competence. 7-day training course that included the following components: Expert lectures and workshops on social entrepreneurship and sustainable development topics. Group discussions, experiences sharing, field visits to successful (eco and sustainable) social enterprises, lectures to apply the concepts to real situations, and to share experiences and perspectives. Field visits and experiential learning activities to showcase social entrepreneurship, sustainable development initiatives and practices in the host country. The training brought together youth workers from diverse backgrounds and sectors to collaborate on social and environmental issues driving innovation. We fostered a culture of innovation by encouraging individuals to think creatively about how to address social and environmental challenges through social enterprises. This also lead to the development of new technologies, products, and services that can benefit society as a whole. By training individuals in social entrepreneurship, we contribute to sustainable development by addressing social and environmental challenges in a way that is economically viable and socially responsible. This can help create a more equitable and sustainable communities.
