In times marked by the escalation of violent and armed conflicts around the world, including within Europe itself, our project aimed to offer peaceful alternatives to violence and its escalation. With Europe facing one of the deadliest conflicts in recent years and numerous other escalations occurring on European soil, we recognised the urgent need to act. Our primary motivation was to prevent radicalisation, hatred, and further violence among youth, while also working toward a peaceful future where every individual is respected and valued with dignity and human rights. We believed that in order to achieve this, it was essential to provide educational support to young people so they would not view violence as the only method to address conflict. As organizations working in Germany (Peace Up!) and across Europe (Youth Peace Ambassadors Network), we had identified a significant need among young people for alternative approaches to conflict. Many youth workers and young people were not familiar with the concepts and methods of mediation, dialogue, and nonviolent communication—key elements of nonviolent conflict transformation. Therefore, in cooperation with our partners, we implemented a long-term educational initiative aimed at equipping young people with the knowledge and tools to address conflicts and foster a culture of peace, particularly in sensitive settings such as frozen conflicts in Kosovo and Cyprus. Recognising that such competencies are often not part of formal education and are generally inaccessible, we also focused on developing practical tools to ensure that mediation, dialogue, and nonviolent communication could be applied across all types of education, formal, informal, and nonformal, especially by grassroots organizations. AIM was to provide 30 youth workers with the necessary skills, knowledge, and competencies in nonviolent communication and mediation as central ideas of conflict transformation, and create practical tools to foster peacebuilding and conflict transformation on a grassroots level. OBJECTIVES: -To understand the basic concepts of nonviolent conflict transformation and its principles, by exploring further peace, violence, conflict, peacebuilding and nonviolence; - To become familiar with the basics, methods, and processes of mediation and develop the ability to practice and apply the learned mediation concepts. - To develop knowledge and practice in nonviolent communication, dialogue, active listening and empathy and how to used them in transforming conflicts within or between groups. - To explore methods and tools for conflict analysis and mapping in order to understand local realities better and apply nonviolent tools to deal with conflicts; - To gain hands-on experience in applying the learned concepts and methods through practical exercises and role-plays. - To design and create digital and analogue tools for conflict transformation based on the principles of mediation and non- violent communication. - To plan follow-up actions for using and implementing the created tools in real-life situations, such as providing support and training for youth workers and organizations in using the tools effectively. Through this project, we wanted to address the growing presence of violence in our societies and the lack of competencies among youth to foster dialogue and transform conflicts in nonviolent ways. By equipping young people with practical tools and educational support in the field of conflict transformation, we aimed to meet their needs and strengthen their capacity to contribute meaningfully to peacebuilding. We also wanted to emphasise the importance of youth participation in decision-making processes, especially concerning conflict transformation. Additionally, the project promoted peace on individual, social, and environmental levels and included a strong focus on sustainable development as an integral part of our approach.
