Objectives

The project #Demokratie und Du aimed at empowering young people to participate in our democratic society by bringing together juvenile energy with participation possibilities, strategies, and tools. The following objectives were formulated to fulfill this overall objective: The main goal of the project was to ENGAGE young people to actively participate in democratic life within European society. They were to be empowered to form their own opinions, identify relevant issues and challenges, and become familiar with the available channels and procedures for political participation. Furthermore, the project aimed to foster an open dialogue between young people and political decision-makers. This direct exchange was intended to EMPOWER young people to voice their concerns within the political sphere, while also strengthening their trust in the responsiveness of the political system. By experiencing that their voices are taken seriously, their confidence in democracy would grow. At the same time, political decision-makers were to be encouraged and inspired to consider the interests of future generations in their present-day political decisions. Another key aspect of the project was to connect young people by showing them how to foster solidarity and engage in collective action towards shared goals—rather than relying on individual efforts, which are often less effective than coordinated, organized initiatives. The project also sought to empower young people to actively shape their own future by asserting their needs and becoming politically and socially engaged. To achieve this, they were to acquire knowledge on how to articulate their interests and initiate democratic debates that could ultimately lead to political action. Through the #Demokratie und Du project, young people were expected to explore the full range of democratic participation opportunities—far beyond voting and protesting—and make use of them in shaping the democratic Europe of the future. This transformed the concept of a "laboratory for democracy" into a real-life, action-oriented application of democratic possibilities.
