By implementing the youth participation project “#Europawahl2024 + Du”, we wanted to empower youngsters to use their voting right and to thereby support them in their discovery of public participation opportunities on EU level. Our aim was to - Strengthen the participants’ knowledge about the European Parliament, its functioning and its role in the EU legislation and to re-connect youngsters with politics. - Support young citizens to formulate their wishes and demands and direct these wishes and demands at the candidates for the European election in 2024. This resulted in the following general and specific objectives of the #Europawahl2024 + Du project: GENERAL OBJECTIVES 1) The first general objective of the project was to EMPOWER youngsters to understand the importance of elections in democratic societies and to ENCOURAGE them to make use of their voting rights in the European elections held in June 2024. Consequently, the students should acquire knowledge about what the EP is, how it is constituted and how important voting is in a democracy in general. 2) The second general objective was to deconstruct the perception that politics is an elitist project that only adults can get involved in. European youngsters should be reconnected with politics by understanding how they can make their voices heard – also despite the electoral process. 3) The third general objective of the project was that the participants should experience the functioning of the EP by taking part in a simulation of the same. The youngsters were supposed to slip in the shoes of politicians and were to be placed in a situation in which they were the ones who need to decide. This would result in a first-hand experience of how cumbersome political processes can be and that the often-perceived slowness of politics is not a reason to be frustrated or to even back away from politics but should rather be a motivation to get involved themselves to advocate for their own concerns and demands. 4) The fourth general objective of the project was to build up trust and the feeling that youngsters are taken seriously by engaging them to claim their role in the political process and to formulate wishes and demands for the next EP legislation period that would be forwarded to the candidates of each constituency in which the events take place. The projects’ specific objective was to implement ten #Europawahl 2024 + Du events. It was planned that each event would consist of one project day that can be held on-site or as an online format.
