Objectives

The project aimed to build upon the experiences and outcomes of a previous ESK Solidarity project initiative (2022-2-DE04-ESC30-SOL-000091257), which was originally launched in response to the war in Ukraine to provide urgent volunteer support for young Ukrainians arriving in Leipzig. While that project focused on cultural activities to ease their arrival, it became evident that the need for support extended beyond short-term emergency assistance and required a sustainable, long-term framework. Our main objectives were therefore to provide a welcoming environment for people with a migration background who are new to Leipzig, regardless of whether they came as refugees or through other circumstances, and to reduce barriers to integration by addressing social challenges such as navigating daily life in a new city and finding connections to the local community. At the same time, we aimed to foster personal connections and social inclusion through shared cultural events and activities that bring together newcomers and local residents, while also creating a sustainable and flexible structure that allows young people; both newly arrived and long-time Leipzig residents to engage in shaping and implementing activities together. In doing so, we sought to empower young people with and without migration experience by providing opportunities to actively participate, contribute their skills and ideas, and develop a sense of ownership and belonging. By doing so, the project not only supported newcomers in their arrival process but also strengthened community cohesion in Leipzig. The initiative responded to the growing and long-term demand for inclusive spaces in a city that continues to experience high levels of immigration. Ultimately, our goal was to ensure that new Leipzigers feel welcomed, supported, and able to connect meaningfully with the local society, while also encouraging active youth participation and intercultural dialogue.
