Due to the escalating youth mental health crisis and factors such as shortage of mental health professionals, long waiting times for getting treatment, lack of affordable opportunities for treatment and lack of awareness about mental health we felt it was necessary to improve the mental health skills of people outside the mental health field having frequent contact with youth such as youth workers. Our objective was to provide youth workers with a training that would help them feel better equipped to deal with young people facing common mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, addictive behaviour, suicidal thinking and stress. We acknowledged that youth workers themselves often face mental health challenges so we wanted the training to be personally beneficial to the youth workers also. We wanted the participants to be aware of and comfortable with using a holistic approach that included the following: 1) Mental Health First Aid training focusing on how to recognize and provide initial response to signs of depression, anxiety, eating disorders, selfharming tendencies and other common problems and the process of making referrals to medical health professionals. 2) Resilience training going beyond mental health first aid and introducing tools taken from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and other modalities aimed at strengthening overall well-being and strengthening the capacity to deal with negative thoughts and emotions. 3) Introducing participants to a regenerative and holistic worldview and showing how engaging with regenerative activities and movements can counteract mental health issues arising from systemic problems outside a young person’s immediate control. 4) Tools taken from yoga, mindfulness and meditation which have been widely shown to be effective in alleviating depression, anxiety, stress and other mental health issues. 5) Other factors having a positive impact on mental health such as diet and lifestyle, creativity and self-expression, contact with nature, interaction with friends and proper rest and sleep. In addition to offering the training our objectives included: to create a continually expanding community of practice of youth workers and youth organisations who are focusing on mental health issues; to create a resource bank containing knowledge and tools which can be accessed by youth workers and youth as well; to include participants facing difficulties in participating normally in society due to mental health issues. Additonal goals of the project included: Raising awareness of the youth mental health crisis; De-stygmatizing mental health struggles and promoting a positive mental health culture.
