The project aimed to expand and deepen the international engagement of the Estonian Academy of Arts in order to provide our students and staff with meaningful opportunities to learn, teach, and collaborate across borders. Estonia is a small country, and our specialist fields of art, design, architecture, cultural heritage, and theory benefit greatly from a constant flow of fresh ideas and perspectives from abroad. By hosting visiting experts from a variety of countries and disciplines, we sought to enrich our academic environment with new approaches, creative practices, and cultural viewpoints that are not readily available locally. In parallel, we wanted to give our own students and staff the opportunity to experience different educational settings, methodologies, and cultural contexts abroad, so that the knowledge and skills gained could be brought back and integrated into our teaching, research, and creative work. We aimed to strengthen our academic partnerships, initiate new collaborations, and ensure that all mobilities—both incoming and outgoing—were fully recognised and meaningfully embedded in our curricula. The objectives were closely aligned with the programme priorities on inclusion, digital transformation, sustainability, and high-quality mobility. We aimed to: Increase the number and diversity of international mobilities for both students and staff, including shorter and blended formats to widen participation. Strengthen cooperation with partner universities and creative institutions to ensure mobility opportunities remain relevant, accessible, and mutually beneficial. Attract incoming teaching and training experts whose knowledge and experience would complement our areas of specialisation and expand our academic discourse. Ensure timely and transparent recognition of studies and traineeships completed abroad, reducing administrative barriers for participants. Support participants with fewer opportunities through targeted communication, additional mentoring, and financial top-ups, making international mobility accessible to all who wish to participate. Promote sustainable practices in travel and project design, including blended learning solutions that reduce the need for extensive travel while maintaining high educational value. Enhance the professional development of academic and administrative staff through international exposure, skills exchange, and participation in training that directly benefits our institutional capacity. In implementing this project, we sought not only to offer individual participants life-changing experiences, but also to strengthen the Academy as a whole. International mobility was seen as a way to keep our teaching and creative practice relevant to a rapidly changing world, to nurture innovation and intercultural dialogue, and to ensure that our relatively small academic community remains deeply connected to the global network of higher education and creative practice.
