Objectives

The main objective of this project was to provide an opportunity for mixed-ability and diverse youth groups to work together on topics that matter to them, in a safe and inclusive environment. We initially planned to carry out three youth exchanges: two for young people aged 21-27 and one for teenagers aged 15-18. However, we were awarded additional funding by the National Agency and successfully implemented a fourth youth exchange for a group aged 14-18. We identified four core objectives when designing the project: 1. To create a safe and flexible space for diverse youth groups to engage in dialogue on topics they care about, using formats they found most appropriate. The groups included participants from different age ranges, cultural and religious backgrounds, life experiences, and with or without disabilities or mental health challenges. Some had prior experience in youth work, others none at all. Despite this diversity, participants were able to connect deeply, exchange perspectives, and reach unexpected and meaningful conclusions. 2. To demonstrate the value of diversity as a resource. We created an environment where all participants-regardless of their backgrounds-could work and spend leisure time together on an equal footing. Through shared experiences, young people discovered that differences do not create awkwardness or barriers, but instead inspire empathy, bring out the best in people, and enrich everyone involved. They learned to see diversity as a strength that broadens horizons and deepens human connection. 3. To give young people a voice. Each group had the opportunity to explore and express their views on relevant topics such as gamification of learning and free time, emotional challenges during adolescence, and tools for self-help and group energizing. They developed concrete outcomes like games, emotional support tools, and a collection of energizers. 4. To promote a hands-on understanding of social inclusion. By working in highly diverse groups throughout each exchange, participants experienced real inclusion, adaptation, and cooperation. They were encouraged to find their own ways to engage with others, build bridges, and understand that compromise and connection are possible when there is mutual respect and openness. Overall, we are deeply satisfied with the results. Our groups brought together young people from different social realities - from confident, well-supported youth from capital cities to young people who are war veterans at 21, returning from combat with disabilities and unable to return to their families. These exchanges allowed participants not only to learn about each other’s stories, but also to understand the inner strength, values, and resilience of their peers. Beyond emotional and ethical growth, they also exchanged practical knowledge and co-created tools that remain useful beyond the project.
