Objectives

The project aimed to raise awareness about climate change and to help students become environmentally responsible citizens with a strong sense of European identity. It sought to connect scientific understanding with practical action, empowering participants to protect their environment and improve their quality of life. Main objectives included: – Promoting environmental literacy and sustainable habits in schools and families. – Encouraging collaboration between students, teachers, municipalities, and NGOs. – Integrating digital and research-based learning through projects such as the bioclimatic classroom, the meteorological station, and the biodiversity study of Rafina. – Strengthening intercultural dialogue and cooperation among partner countries. – Developing key competences such as communication, creativity, and teamwork. Through these goals, the project supported the priorities of the European Green Deal and the Erasmus+ vision for active, inclusive, and eco-conscious citizenship.

Background

The project “Protect Your Nature, Protect Your Future” was created to address the urgent need for environmental awareness and sustainable education. In Rafina, a coastal town facing biodiversity loss and climate impacts, students showed limited understanding of how daily actions affect the environment. Teachers also needed new tools for teaching sustainability and digital skills. The 1st Gymnasio of Rafina applied to connect environmental education with active citizenship and to promote responsible European values. In cooperation with the Municipality of Rafina-Pikermi, the school linked learning with community action through real environmental projects such as the bioclimatic classroom with robotic applications, the biodiversity study of Rafina’s coastal area, and the school meteorological station. The project responded to both local and European needs, fostering awareness, digital innovation, and collaboration among schools to support the goals of the European Green Deal.
