The project aimed to create an innovative, accessible and pedagogically robust digital repository that brings together testimonies of displaced individuals, expert insights and multimodal educational resources. Its objectives were to support inclusive teaching practices, strengthen educators’ capacity to address linguistic, cultural and social diversity, and promote democratic and intercultural competences among learners. It sought to document real-life stories through ethical, participatory methodologies and to make them available in multiple languages within a structured, user-friendly platform. The project also aimed to systematise best practices in intercultural and multimodal education, enhance teaching digital literacies, and provide a common European space for reflection among educators, researchers and students. Finally, VOLARE sought to foster transnational collaboration and contribute to higher education innovation by integrating digital design, ethnographic research and inclusive pedagogy. By highliting the significance of human testimonies of, and aroud, displacement, VOLARE sought to achive visibility of marginalized individuals, ehnance pedagogical preparedness and ignite ethical accountability.
The project was launched in response to urgent educational needs arising from ongoing migration towards Europe and the documented lack of preparedness among teachers to support refugee, migrant and minority learners. Partners identified a gap in accessible, ethically curated multimodal material for intercultural education and the absence of a unified digital repository combining testimonies, expert knowledge and pedagogical resources . Existing school systems, especailly in southern Europe, struggled to integrate displaced children, and educators lacked tools to address trauma, linguistic diversity and democratic participation. At the same time, young refugees’ and migrants’ voices remained largely absent from educational resources and the public sphere (including online outputs), despite their value for fostering empathy and civic understanding. The consortium recognised a need for an inclusive, research-informed and user-friendly platform that could bring together testimony, multimodal resources and innovative methodologies, supporting teachers, students and researchers across Europe. VOLARE was conceived as a response to these pedagogical and systemic needs and comprised a set of partners strategically situated to address them.
